Here is the reply I received from CTN. - You have been told correctly that you cannot get registered in the UK with just an Associates Degree. If you have an Associates Degree and a Bachelors in something deemed nursing related such as Science you are able to but your Associates Degree must be over a two year period. As you hold your BSc there should not be any problems for you. - good news. Should I give CTN your name? Do you get anything for referal? (being hopeful all works out :-)

Oh good news tlinda! Yes, sure you can give them my name. They use to do referral bonuses, but I don't think that is until you sign on and start working, and I don't think I'll be with them then as we'll be going back to the States this year. But you are welcome to give them my name if you'd like.

Let me know how it goes for you!

Oh good news on the 20d ONP! But so now will you need to work for 6 months during the application process?

Yes. Funny though, I initially saw it as a dead end; but the process will take some time and I am looking for employment. (one of those faces, eyes rolling, palm slapping temple :-) I also was told that if you work in any EU country for 3 years, you apply as if from the EU - much simpler. (This may help someone reading.) Anyway we will get in contact again April when I leave Bahrain. BTW: did you get my email? I would still be interested to know about contract jobs. Thanks!

Hi Gus, the UK Border Agency is in a bit of a muddle over how to admit foreign nurses to the UK for ONP purposes. Basically the only route in will be for those who have a confirmed job offer to follow on straght after they've completed their ONP course.Such cases will be treated under the TIER 2 (PBS) Visa.

Try signing up with www.prevent-illegal-working.co.uk for help researching any UK Immgration query concerning working legally as a nurse n the UK. Also tells you which type of visa holders can/can't work

To clarify - Americans, Canadians and Australians, along with others, DO NOT NEED A VISA to take the ONP. You go to the UK and take the course on your passport as a visitor.

You do not have to join any sort of other group to research your immigration query. You can find out all you need to know directly by going here:
http://www.bia.homeoffice.gov.uk/workingintheuk/

A nurse is a sponsored worker under the Tier 2 visa. Once your employer sponsors you, they will tell you what website to go to and what information to enter. You will then be able to trace your visa application process from there and will have to go to a UK Border Agency office near you in order to submit all of your documents and your passport for the visa.

The UK is really tightening up on entry requirements for all categories of visa and given the ongoing discussions around the ONP it's safer to check before travelling.I'll make some enquiries re travelling in as a visitor to undertake the 20 days protected learning and report back. The current position as I undertand it is that one may only travel in for the 20 day programme under TIER 2 if you have a confirmed job offer.

@marathon15 - I'm sorry but I think you misunderstand how everything works. I am an US RN who works in the UK and did the ONP.

Here is the information about the 20 day ONP program
http://www.bournemouth.ac.uk/hsc/overseasnurse.html

YOU DO NOT NEED A VISA. Maybe other countries such as the Philippines do, I do not know about other countries. But I do know for 100% sure that if you do not need a visa to enter the UK, you do not need a visa to do the ONP. You can stay 90 days in the UK on your passport alone as an US, Australian or Canadian citizen (Australians can even get other types of visas for travel and stay depending on a variety of things - age, ancestry, etc.).

This is how it worked for me. I registered for the ONP course. I booked a flight from Eindhoven (near where I'm living) to Stansted London. I arrived in London and they asked me what I'll be doing there. I told them I was going to Bournemouth to take a course. They asked how long, I told them. They stamped my passport with a entry stamp that said I was not authorized to work. I got on the Stansted express to London, took a train from London to Bournemouth and the next day walked into the 1st day of my ONP. Upon arriving to Bournemouth University I filled out my registration paperwork, provided a passport photo for my new university ID, paid my tuition cost and received my books. Viola! That was all there is. I did not have to provide them with any visa. They want to see my passport to see that I'm an American and take down the pertinent details, but they do not look for a visa nor do you need one.

You are suppose to stay in country for the 20 days of ONP, but many people take the time to travel since the course is via correspondence. Since you only meet on day 1, at the midpoint and on day 20, many people tour around Europe or the UK. You are not in class daily. There is really no reason to need a visa. The ONP will book you on your course once the NMC has approved your application. You cannot get into the ONP course without that approval. That is the only stipulation.

I traveled out of the UK several times in those 20 days and each time I went back in I didn't need a visa.

I can speak from my experience and from those I have met along the way. Out of the people in my 20 day ONP course (all were Canadians, Australians, Americans or New Zealanders) - and there were 30 of them - none of them needed a visa.

You MUST however, have a sponsored visa to work unless you have a visa of another kind, i.e., spouse, ancestry, working holiday (now called youth mobility), or British or EU passport.

Please see the following post for requirements for Bournemouth.

Overseas Nurse Programme Leading to Registration in the United Kingdom (U.K.)
All nurses who trained outside the U.K. need to be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in order to practice as a qualified nurse in the U.K. As from September 2005 all Overseas Nurse Programmes must be approved by the NMC and be delivered through service providers, in partnership with a Higher Education Institution (HEI). The Bournemouth University ONP was approved in September 2005.

Information on this course can be found below in addition to details on the application process.

@Gus. I'm not sure how else I can explain it to you. You do not need a visa to take the ONP.

If you need a visa to enter the UK, you must get a visa.

If you do not need a visa to enter the UK, you do not get a visa.

It has nothing to do with the ONP.

Hello, Does anyone know how I can possibly work as a Nurse in UK with an ADN (Associate degree in Nursing) I realize that the NMC changed the criteria a few years ago & I should have applied before the changes were implemented! I've been an RN for 21 years, but they only recognize clinical hours in one's original nursing program. Someone mentioned on an earlier post that they know of someone with an ADN who did a "course" in order to qualify for NMC registration. 2 colleagues of mine, both with ADN's obtained their NMC registrations 7 or 8 years ago, before the "new" rules were implemented. I'm most grateful for any advice! Thank you.
