Hi Heather!
You are more than welcome. Good luck on your IELTS! Both Bournemouth and Portsmouth are beautiful places - you will enjoy living there.

I've been working and living in London at St Thomas Hospital. Yes, the work environment is very different. Do you know how to scrub? They only take RNs in the theatre if they know how to scrub. RNs don't circulate in the UK, and unfortunately they will not teach you how to scrub. If you can't scrub, no worries - you can always do PACU or pre-op. There are a lot of differences in technology as they do not have the money we do in the US. They do routine laparotomies over MRIs because they are cheaper and allow residents theatre time. They do not have computerized charting and of course you will have to spell like the British do. :) An anesthesiologist is an anesthetist, pronounced a-nee-sthetist. They also use many different words and of course different drugs than we do. It is a steep learning curve at the beginning, but most nurses are happy to help. The pay is also less than US pay, so another thing to consider.

Please feel free to post here or email me if you have any other questions. :)

Thanks for responding. Yes, I do know how to scrub. I just don't scrub CV, neuro, or ortho. I can scrub any other surgery without any training or help.
Of course, I can also do PACU and pre-op as we often are a jack of all trades at the hospital I work at.

Thanks for the info about the ex laps and the paper charting!! OMG, that sounds so different. However, it's all good as it will be a fantastic experience. I have had 6 months to ponder it over in my head before I made a solid decision to pursue it. And yes, the financial aspect is something that held me back a bit...but I'm over it now. As I have said several times previously to friends, moving there is absolutely financial suicide on my part but happiness is more important to me.

I've only been in England during the winter months but I am coming for a week in July so I'm excited to see the country during the summer!

Oh, so one more question for now - concerning the IELTS results: the administrator of the IELTS was concerned that she needed to send my test results to the NMC directly. From everything I read, it seems as though I am suppose to put the test results on the request for my application? And do I send them a copy of the results, as I will only be receiving one original copy?

Thanks again!

That is good then! You will be wanted and easily find a position.

Yes, it is a fantastic experience and I have met the most lovely people there. I would not trade the experience for anything. I was fortunate to be married and be able to tap into our joint account as needed. I do not know how I would have survived on my own salary. I have friends who work for the Trust directly and they make more than the agency RNs. So if you can find a Trust who will sponsor your visa, that is ideal, but also very hard to come by. They also prefer to sponsor Australians as their medical system is similar to the UK's.

It is beautiful in summer, although this summer has been quite rainy and cold. Hoping it warms up soon!

Yes, you need to send the original to the NMC, but do keep a copy for yourself. And yes, you put the info on the paper as well.

Let me know if you need anything else along the way!

Rickboy - you may get licensed by the NMC as their criteria is only that you pass the IELTS, have a license and a degree and have worked for at least 1 year. However, you are unlikely to be sponsored with only 1 year of clinic experience. The only visas they are giving out at this time is for theatre or ICU experience and most agencies will not hire you without some sort of hospital experience and at least 2 years. You may get licensed (that is the decision of the NMC, so no one can tell you if you will or won't here) but you will probably be hard pressed finding someone to sponsor you without hospital and time experience.

thanks for the input. i don't have any problem with sponsorship. my worry is that the NMC might verify my reference and he's out of the country now and may not be able to attend to the call.

That's something you would have to speak to the NMC about.

Good luck!

Hi Lauritasol, it is really wonderful of you helping and providing information for nurses here. I deeply appreciate it. I have another question if it's ok with you. I have already sent my pack 2 to the NMC and is currently waiting for my decision letter which is expected to arrive this June 14. Now, is it alright if i resign now from my work because i would like to have some quality time to prepare myself for my transition there in the UK as a theatre nurse. Will i have problems applying for my visa  if i am now currently unemployed? or is it just alright?

I'll be looking forward to hear from you again.

Thank you.

NurseO.R. - when you quit your job is up to you, but you do know that you still have quite a bit of time left before you start working. You still have to do a 20 day ONP course in the UK and also to get your visa which took me 2 months. So that is 3 months of not working right there. The visa has nothing to do with you working or not. They do not ask you anything about your working at present, but you do have to show with your bank statements that you have at least £800 in cash available to you before they will let you into the country. So, if you quit working and your account dwindles, then you will not be able to get a visa. HTH!

Owla - that is up to the discretion of the hospital or agency who employs you regarding whether or not they thing your experience is sufficient. Unfortunately that is not something anyone here can help you with. Each employer is looking for certain things and they want to make sure they hire someone who needs little on the job training as that costs time and money. These are the things they will be looking for - whether or not you are proficient in the area you are interviewing for and whether or not you can begin work straight away with only a 1 or 2 day orientation.

Hey Laura.
I took my IETLS on Saturday and as expected, did not have a problem with any of it. Good news is that my nursing school has a designated person who has calculated credit hours to actual hours previously and so they said it will only take a couple of days to be ready for me.
I am curious if I will be paying one or two fees to the NMC? By reading some posts on the internet, it seems that there is more than one packet that is sent out each with a payment required. It all seems clear as mud to me. Hope all is well with you.

Hericha - congratulations on your IELTS. I got nervous when they started speaking British English and ended up missing the 1st question, but after that I did well. You begin to panic though thinking possibly that you could actually fail an English exam! :)

That is good news on the person who is going to convert your hours. For me, it took months and I ended up doing the conversion myself, sending it to them and asking them to put it on letterhead if they deemed it correct. So that is great that they have someone who actually knows what they are doing!

I did pay 2 fees. One when I submitted my original paperwork and one when I paid for my license. I think the first fee is smaller, more of a deposit to process your application and to ensure your commitment before they start to take on all the paper work and processing. I do not recall how much I paid as that was way back in 2007, and possibly the fees have gone up now, but I am sure you can find the amount on the NMC site. There's an application fee and a licensing fee. HTH!

Hi Laura
Just an update: I received my IELTS results with a 9.0 and have sent in my request for my application. Hope the 21 business days that they say it could take rolls on quick enough. I'm coming to the UK next week and am going to have the opportunity to tour the one of the NHS hospitals in Middlesbrough. My bf's mother is a nurse at the hospital and is kind enough to afford me the opportunity.
Hope all is well.
regards,
heather
