Do you mind sharing YOUR own story or the reason why you chose nursing?
Inspired by a recent member posting on why she is pursuing a career in nursing, we thought we would ask everyone the same question. Please share. |

To be perfectly honest with you, at first i wanted to earn money for myself but later on...in the middle of my nursing practice while i was a student at that time i realize nursing is not just about the "money". my heart was captured when i had my practice in a mentally challenged adults and psychiatric wards where they did not have enough financial support from our government. It made me want more to become a nurse because i wanted to earn the right amount of money that i may be able to support a charitable institution in my country that are not well supported by the government. I do not care for whatever is the money that i will receive but my main focus is to extend my hand for these people who are in need of care. |

I really don't know why I became a nurse. It was one of my options after high school. I helped with my grandmother, after she had pacemaker surgery. She lived with us for a while, while recuperating and it was something I enjoyed. I have since worked in many areas of nursing and in many places in the midwest. I am currently working in a LTC facility and truly enjoy the time spent with the elderly. They have so much to share. |

| I have always wanted to help out others in some way... and nursing just seemed automatic for me. |

| Wow! When I stop to think of it I have always wanted to be a nurse. Although I was a tough tom-boy growing up, I became very interested in boo-boo's. I volunteered as a young pre-teen at a LTC facility and saw a caring compassionate side of me that I liked. I love to see wounds heal, I love to be a voice for those that can't voice them, I love to be needed, I love the elderly, I love to make a difference...I guess I was born to be a nurse. I tried other fields like Prison work for state benefits and not to mention much better pay, but I came right back to nursing. It is in my heart, it is my passion! |

When my doll was run over by a neighbor, my mom couldn't make her better. That is when I decided to become a doctor to fix people.
When I was hospitalized for the croup, the doctor told the nurses to give me shots and the nurses rocked me in the rocking chair and made me feel good. That is when I decided to become a nurse.
As a teenager, I volunteered at my local hospital as a "candy-striper" and loved it. I have always wanted to help make people feel better, whether with a smile, friendly conversation, joke, or medication. That is why I am a nurse. Deb |

| I think I have always wanted to be a nurse. I think the reason I became a nurse was I believe God called me to be one. He put the desire in my heart and then He opened the windows and doors for me to become His servant/nurse. I am close to the end of my career and can truthfully say I am so grateful for the opportunity to care for those who could not care for themselves. The ability to comfort the suffering, to care for the injured and to lead others is to me the epitome of who a nurse is and what I have strived to do all my years as a nurse. |

| Actually my mom wanted me to be a nurse but she couldn't so she told me to study them or not go to college at all. How cruel, isn't she? But I learn to like my profession |

| I am always fascinated with public health issues. For many years, I worked as an unpaid volunteer providing health education among gay and bisexual men in the Philippines about HIV AIDS. I participated in several forums such as the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on HIV/AIDS in New York, in 2001 and 2006. Now that I am studying nursing, I hope to become more effective in providing health education and maybe become more active in promoting public health care to the poor. |

How old is your Mom? Why couldn't she be a nurse? I am glad you like your profession now. Nursing has been good to me and my family. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

| I was imprinted by the nurses in my family when I was very young. I knew when I was five that I wanted to be a nurse. I believe I was 'called' to nursing. I enjoy the profession and enjoy helping others who want to become nurses. |

| My parents are both accountants, i'm an only son of five. I took up nursing as a pre medicine course. After passing the licensure exam, a friend and I after some unexplained descisions ended up working in Saudi Arabia. Now two of my sisters are nurses too. Im married to a nurse, I have two sons one a fresh registered nurse, and the other is planning to be a nurse too after high school.........life is good. |

| I took nursing as a pre medicine course too but God's blueprint in my life is to be a nurse not a doctor. I love my job now specially seeing people get healed and happy and content even when they are ill or frail and waiting for their end. |

I'm the caregiver of the family. Always have been. After being a stay-at-home dad for 12+ years I found that the world had seemingly passed me by. No longer content to remain dependent on my wife for support, I enrolled at the local college she works at. I had no idea what I wanted to be when I "grew up," so I focused on core curriculum. After a year I was leaning towards pursuing a Master's level Cert in Psychology, but couldn't come up with a workable plan to attend classes at the nearest university offering it, some 90 miles away. Through the years many people have told me I should have been a nurse, and indeed many of my best friends were nurses. One day a lighbulb went off and I finally realized that I SHOULD HAVE BEEN A NURSE! I began taking the prerequisite courses to enter the ADN program at our little college and will complete all but one course this semester. I'll knock out A&P II this summer andl dive into the nursing curriculum this fall. I've done well in school so far and look forward to my coming challenge! |

I'm smiling right now... today was not a good day... but I was just reading the last few posts and believe it or not, it just gave me the bit of encouragement I desperately needed. Sometimes hearing other peoples reasons for getting into this profession can rekindle enough strength to go on. I know, it's cheesy. |

| To take care of people and to understand what is going on when a loved one has medical problems. My grandfather raised me as his own, since my father didn't want nothing to do with me, and when he died of cancer in the hospital, I was only 16 years old. I didn't understand anything that was going on, so I made a vow to become a nurse and take care of people, the same as the amazing nurses that took care of my grandpa! And years later, I went to work on the same unit, with the same nurses that inspired me! |

| When I was at uni our lecturers requested a essay on why we wanted to become nurses we discussed this in class everybody seemed to have an answer, I sat there and mimicked another standard response, I want to care for people - it didn’t occur to me that I really needed a reason. After this the lecturer stated that the majority of nurses who gave up were ones who did not have legitimate reasons to begin nursing, because it’s definitely not about the money. I have been nursing for a year and I love the job, I hope to nurse until the stage where I will need to be nursed I wish to nurse in every country in the world I am fascinated by the human body and disease processes but ultimately I cannot look past those who they affect. I did not have a reason to begin but I have a million to stay. |

| During my college entrance exam, I almost forgot to fill up the part which asks what college I want to be in. I wanted to become an Engineer in the future but I found myself writing "Bachelor of Science in Nursing" while Engineering became my second option. I really didn't like nursing during the first 2 years in college coz it was so challenging. During my first ever duty in one of the public hospitals here, I realized how exhausting it is to become a nurse.. the paper works and time pressure is just not a thing I want to deal with but i went through with it keeping in mind that this is just a really bumpy road i need to go through and at the end of the road is a pot of gold.. Well, I'm just really after the money when I enrolled in Nursing. But it was During my 3rd and 4th year in Nursing that i realized that Nursing is not a job, it is a vocation. It is something you do because you love life and you want others to enjoy life the way that you do that's why you/we help them go through their illnesses. Nursing is such a life changing experience. |

| I was a CNA in a very good facility in omaha. Loved that work, but the administrator stated that i should become a nurse. At the time was a single mom with a young son, a mortgage and a car payment and was making fairly good money, but decided to enroll in one class and that was anatomy and thought well if i pass Ill keep going. Amazingly enough (to me) I passed with an A. So decided to take 2 more classes found out that one met every thursday and since i worked every thurs thought well this is it no more school for me, but when i told my administrator she stated go tell the staffing person i was going to need every thurs off. That was the beginning and it rolled like i never thought it would. It seemed i had more than enough money to sustain me thur school, I worked fulltime the whole time i was in school, but the facility i worked for reimbursed me for every class i took. To everyone out there that is at this time in school, it is a stressfull time, and it is a complete change of life in that you have no social life or much of anything else, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel and when you get there take it from me you will say that it was not that bad. I feel that this is the proffession God meant for me to be in because he sure was with me the whole way as he is now. |
