Hello everyone! I would like to really find out whether I should take CGFNS. I am currently working in the Philippines and although I realize there seems to be no end to retrogression, I want to be prepared. I have been told by a staffing company that I should really just focus on passing NCLEX because this is the exam necessary to work as a nurse in the US. So, then why has it been ingrained in us to take CGFNS??? I would love to get feedback, thanks in advance. <img src=/DesktopModules/NTForums/themes/red/emoticons/blink.gif width=20 height=20>

in order to obtain a visa screen certificate you have to pass either CGFNS or NCLEX and an English exam. not sure though, if some states require both exams.

Some states do require both. Most of them actually. About 85% of them do. But if you work with the right recruitment firm, they will bring you into a state that only requires English and NCLEX.

You have plenty of choices of States that don't require CGFNS exam - suggest you go to one of those & save yourself the time, effort & money! The websites of the Boards of Nursing will have details of thier requiremnets.

Also beware that in some States - such as California - there are problems for those applying and now stuck in retrogression. I'm not entirely sure exactly what the problems are, it's something to do with time limits on applications being fulfilled I think. Do your research very carefully. You should also check out this site - www.allnurses.com - which has loads of info on that topic.

Here is a place that makes it very easy to navigate what states need.
http://www.kaplannursing.com/Nursing_International/CGFNS/Learn-About-the-CGFNS/NS_intl_state.html

Also, make sure you ask any further questions to your international recruitment firm. Their licensing and visa teams know exactly what is needed and will guide you.

Hello:

You are correct, it is advisable to focus on NCLEX and enroll in a Kaplan study program to assist you.  Then apply for your VisaScreen certification through CGFNS.  This will complete the certification/licensure process required to fie your casework with USCIS and obtain your immigrant visa at the US Consulate as a Nurse.

Every US state requires NCLEX, unless you are from a few specific countries that recognize equal proficiency in basic nursing preparation.
