There was a separate bill introduced by Sen. Menendez (D-NJ) on Aug 1st and is backed by a few other senators. It has a lot of corrections on the current visa system. This bill calls for the recapture of unused visas of the past years since 1992. Again, Congress is not in session until Sept but as you can see, it is becoming a more prominent issue. Stay tuned

Wow! That's 16 years difference I hope there's many unused visas for those years. This should fill in a large number.

Look forward to more update.

Thanks

It looks like the bills are going for markup this week. This means there is a chance (yes a very slight one) that one of the bills could be voted on in 2008. I will keep you updated as more information becomes available this week.

The marup of the bill has been postponed to this week. Also the new visa bulletin came out and actually dates moved back. I will post again when info becomes more readily available.

I am an international student, however I am an RN in USA, my schooling was done here (4 yrs for a BS and another year for an accelerated ADN). While going to school my instructors and advisors were unaware of the retrogression and therefore when I graduated it cought me off guard. Now, more than antything I want to be a nurse, but I am back in school getting my masters sooner than planned.
You have mentioned that having experience is great, but how am I supposed to obtained it when I am still in the US and cannot work.

Thank you,

Diana

There are hospitals that offer a graduate nurse program-- for nurses who have not yet passed the NCLEX, but I see your predicament. As an international student, you are not legally allowed to work, correct??

Correct, I cannot do an internship program. I am very limited, and also in my country everything is different, it's not like I can go back home and work there.

Plese ask away, you said that you would need more information, so please ask me anything.

I don't know if I should be holding my breath or maybe looking at Canada or Australia as options.

I would also love to do some medical mission trips, if you know of any that will scheduled for summer of 2009, please let me know!

Thank you,

Diana Busjra, RN

Bills in Congress have been delayed again. With Congress going on recess next week, they will be back in November but it will be a lame duck session due to the election.
So in other words, the earliest anything could really be voted on is in the second quarter of next year. That again, is the earliest.

If you are in the US with a student visa, what limitations do you have re: travel outside the US?  There may be some volunteering options you can do as well.  Let me know and also accept my friends request--    Canada and Australia are always options.

I wonder if you would be able to find meaningful opportunities for gaining experience by volunteering? Obviously I don't know your financial situation, and thus, this may not be a reasonable option. Any road, the bottom line is: experience is experience, no?

Best of luck to you!

I don't think it is really advantageous for a US nurse to work in Canada (unless of family ties, etc) as the taxes are a lot higher compared to what we have in the US. However, it seems like Diane, you are truly in a tough situation as you have a student visa that restricts you from working as a nurse. You are doing the only thing you can do... keep going to school until you can apply for a change of status once retrogression has been lifted.

Thank you for all the support, it's been challenging, going to school and not getting the degree I really want to.
I'm a student, so pretty much no finances, I do want to volunteer. If there is a program that would pay for room and board, I'll manage to get there somehow. As a student I have the winter, spring and summer break, I would prefer to do something over the summer, since it is long and I can contribute more time.

Thank you everyone,

Diana Busjra, RN

P.S. I did accept the friend request, thank you.

Diana, with your student visa, are you able to leave the US? Or are you looking at volunteer opportunities within the States?

I am moving this thread re: potential volunteer opportunities to the VOLUNTEER section.

Hi Randy & Jenny,

Thanks for your valuable input in this forum. I am an R.N. from India finished my NCLEX for NY State and IELTS. I am fed up in taking CGFNS. Can you refer us any Agencies who hire Nurses from India. I checked a lot of Agencies in your site. I would like to process my visa with a good(Professional) company with minimum contract say 1 yr or 18 months, not 3 yrs. contract. As the retrogression is still pending, may i know how long it will take if i register with any agency. I got to know that some law has been passed where they are going to use the unused visas and in the new bill it has 20,000 Visas for R.N. every year. Is it true?. If so when actually the bill will come to law.

I am sorry for firing you with so many questions.

Thanks,
Nancy.
