No need to really answer that question, I know everyone has.  I'm just having one of those days/nights.  Going on 4 hours of sleep.

Hope you are getting enough rest. I can actually "feel" how tired you are from your post. My wish for you is for at least 12 hours uninterrupted sleep. Turn off your cell phone, turn on your sleep CD, make sure you are in complete darkness and just REST. If at all possible, try to wake up when there is still light outside, go for a walk or a jog... Believe it or not, this is how I try to recovery from jet lag and with nurses' schedule, the recovery for both are very similar. Just trying to get your body adjusted back to some time of routine.

All the time girl... all the time. But then you have the occasional good shift and you forget, pretty much, all that sh*** stuff. It's STILL a pretty good gig!

Thank you ma'am for the support.. although we are a thousand miles away (at least), I can always feel the support of my fellow nurses here. Thanks for always keeping the site encouraging... I have been a member of other sites where it seems like everyone has nothing but negative things to say. It's refreshing and sometimes its the kind words of strangers that can make a difference. Thanks again.

I thought I would share a course on Burnout that might give some insight into what might be happening. The course is Burnout: Coping with Stess at http://www.nursingceu.com/courses/265/index_nceu.html

I'm very tired all the time because I'm not very healthy. Even when I'm healthy, I am tired. I suppose one reason is that I'm always anemic, but that doesn't count for all of it. Would love to have some get up and go.

Ok, it is my turn to offer some support and reminder that we need to care about ourselves in the same way we care for others.  I hope you get some rest-- both physically and mentally.  We all need that once in a while.

I know that this doesn't really count... but jetlagged and tired after a month long honeymoon in Europe.... Just got in yesterday and I don't want to go back to work tomorrow... Let the sympathy flow!

I can feel all the empathy oozing from the pores of my colleagues here. The first shift back was in triage and it was brutal. Several bad traumas and it seemed that everyone that had had abdo pain for the last several months, needed to be seen STAT, and couldn't figger out why we weren't sending them back as quickly as the intubated traumas. grrrr. If you can walk up to triage all blustery and pissed offfive times in an hour, I'm not that concerned as to the state of your health.
Up to snuff now. Trying to pick up extra shifts (scant right now) to pay off the honeymoon. Just wish the missus was working too, dammit!

Hey Shovelhead,

Extra shifts scant due to the season/time of year?  How (if any) has the recession affected health care in Canada? Sorry for the d.u.m. question, but I wanted to ask.  And what's the missus doing?  Loving life and eating bon-bons?  Yea, right.  Kidding around, eh?  (had to throw that in)

I have to tippy toe here as we have been told that we can be sacked for dissension if we express any concerns with our new Alberta Health mucky muck Mr Stephen Duckett (an import from Australia I may add). Our new CEO has announced that there is no nursing shortage, frozen OT and frozen any jobs that were being advertised. Ergo, my going in for a straight four hrs this afternoon. As there weren't any nurses answering the for the posted jobs, there must not be any shortage of nurses... ermmmm or so the thought seems to go. Personally I think the "Nursing Shortage" is a farce, kinda like the "Holocaust". Just a hyped up story to engender sympathy... No REAL basis in fact. Just because experts around the world have voiced their opinions doesn't make it so... We seem to work a nurse short a shift (at least one) because there won't be any authorization for OT until there are four or five off. Nice working conditions.
And the missus is still "looking for work". She fixes plane electronics for a living but is looking to retrain to something else now. The flavour of the week is in the Culinary arts. Sometimes it feels like she is sitting around eating bon bons... Apparently I am still expected to do half the laundry, cooking, and housework, as well as ALL the yard-work BIG yard!!), and the kitty box. Yes I am stressed and miffed about it.

When I read your post and all others actually, I just get so peeved at the entire system. I hate hearing how bad working conditions can get for the nursing professionals and I get angry, but then I look at what's happening in my own hospital and I feel helpless to do anything about it. Hate feeling like a puppet, hate having to voice out that things should be better because if I say too much, I may be out of a job or shorted a shift... so we work on, glad to have a job. Lately, I have been seeing more ads on TV about keeping U.S. jobs for Americans and when I see/hear/read about nurses from other countries wanting to work here, I feel like a child not wanting to share her toys... because I don't want to lose my job to anyone else even though I may not always think I am being treated fairly. It's a freaking vicious cycle, I tell you.

But, if you take away all these outside issues and we just talk about patient care, believe it or not, I still feel committed and I actually have a smile on my face. When it comes to direct pt. care, I feel good about what I do, but take me out of a pt room and I have to deal with the politics, issues, etc... and its like putting the whole weight of the world back on my shoulder again.

So, yea, I am mentally tired sometimes that i don't want to go back, but I do. See, the passion being a nurse is what keeps me going, its all the other factors that drain me.

And Shovelhead, I feel your pain. I have 2 full time jobs - active duty nurse and active duty house manager too. Signing off, TIRED!

I many times have felt that. My floor is so hectic and the stress level is so high that I have to really force myself to go to work. I love the residents I take care of, they're like family to me, but its been hell lately. Everyone, residents and staff have been snapping at each other and basically making each other miserable. I'm off for a month due to minor surgery and am not looking forward to going back. ......"Personally I think the "Nursing Shortage" is a farce, kinda like the "Holocaust"". Please tell me I'm not misreading this sentence. Are you saying that the Holocaust is fake. I'm of German descent and it makes me sick to think that really happened. Are you trying to say all the holocaust survivors who have told their stories have lied. You really need to get real. You sir, are Delusional. That is all I'm going to say as this site for Nursing issues and not history.
