Way to go Showtime. NOT! Way to throw us in the dirt. I am an RN. I am health professional who works full time and occasionally works in an ER. I have never in 33 years had time to go out to lunch with anyone (much less a doctor) during my 12 hour shift, nor have I had sex on the job, nor have I been high at work, I have not stolen money or anything else. I have treated all of my patients with the high standards and compasion that is required of a Registered Nurse. I am insulted and appalled at your lack of respect and regard for Nurses. If you want to accurately portray a nurse I suggest you spend a minimum of 10 shifts working alongside me in my RN shoes. Nurse Jackie is hardly an fair portrait of a nurse and this nurse is horrified by this show. I hope that when you or a loved one ends up in a hospital ER that you don't end up with any nurse remotely like Nurse Jackie. |

I have to say I agree with Dutchie. Nurse Jackie is not how I would like to see nurses portrayed on television or any media. I know that there are nurses with drug problems, but Showtime's portrayal is an insult to all that we do. I realize that it is supposed to be a comedy, but I honestly didn't find it very amusing and as a nurse, I felt much anger and resentment. Is it so hard to portray nursing truthfully? Are people in the media totally clueless as to what we do? I guess so, because they have yet to get it right. I for one will not be watching this show.

regarding Nurse Jackie - the character and situations are fictional - it's a "dark comedy" and meant for entertainment purposes - in that context I thought it was good

I didn't like the light it portrayed a nurse, but I also can name numerous shows that shed light negatively on a profession. But again its entertainment.... The funny part is I heard this was lossely based on a REAL nurse! But again, thats one nurse...

I think the key is the way Showtime described the show; "dark comedy". It's not a documentary!

Dutchie - I don't think they are trying to accurately portray nurses. It's Hollywood, and they don't accurately portray doctors, cops, the military, or any other honorable profession. I don't think the emphasis should be on the fact that she's a nurse - I think we should be questioning the content regardless of her profession. It's typical "liberal" nonsense, and that is what you have to take it for.

I just ran across this intelligent new RN site that is hosting a lively discussion on both new nurse TV shows-Nurse Jackie and HawthoRNe (which debuts tonight on TNT). www.rnvoices.net/ In addition there is an important discussion on achieving a national law that would mandate minimum RN-to-patient safe staffing ratios, protects the rights of nurses to advocate on behalf of their patients, and to invest in training new nurses, and provide whistle blower protection for nurses who report unsafe conditions. It called the National Nursing Shortage Reform and Patient Advocacy Act (BOXER) SB103. Exciting times we are living in. |

Watched the first episode online and was not favorably impressed. Struck me as distasteful on a visceral level. I won't be making any effort to continue watching. Besides, I prefer shows that last one hour, so you have enough time to get your mind off other stuff while you watch.

I am an RN, I of course, take my job seriously!.but, like someone else mentioned, it is a dark comedy, comes on LATE.and with those 12 hour shifts.REAL nurses would either be in bed (preparing for there long shift the next day) or WORKING and no time to watch. so, I dont think it really is taken seriously as the reality of a real nurse. so, relax guys!.us nurses have enough to worry about, like 7-9 patient s apiece on med-surg or Obama's new social medicine that would LOWER our already low per hour rates concidering what we do everyday,.so, take a chill pill! ( got that one from Nurse Jackie).

Sometimes it is nice to see just what others think about the role as a nurse. We all know that there are people just like "Nurse Jackie" that lurk in our profession. Again this is a fictional show, I do happen to like it. It does not represent all nurses and I don't take offense to this. I know what I am and what I am capable of. Get over it people.
