Thanks Jenny, I believe the only solution to this issues will come from us nurses. Here in the Philippines, we have this Party-List System where marginalized groups can actually have a seat in congress. We could have up to 5 seats in congress.

My filipino colleagues, nursing students, OFW nurses and our families, we have the numbers, we could actually have solutions to the many issues regarding our profession.

Let us put people in congress NURSES who understand and feel our plight......together we will prevail....

I was once a volunteer in one the hospitals in the Phils. I have no choice but to grab the chance to become one in order to gain the experience. If you become one of the nurse volunteers, and pay the training fee, you would also feel being exploited.  NURSE VOLUNTEERS..............ONLY IN THE PHILIPPINES.   I feel so blessed that I am now working in the USA.

I was once a nurse volunteer who paid for the training fee in one of the hospitals in the Phils, I have no choice but to grab the chance in order to gain the confidence in nsg skills. It will also be a good karma if you serve people for free. I feel so blessed that I am now working in the USA. Well, all I can say regarding NURSE VOLUNTEERS.............ONLY IN THE PHILIPPINES !

I would like to thank our many colleagues who participated in the live chat regarding the issues concerning us, the filipino nurses

Manny issues have been written and said with regards to the plight of many Filipino nurses. There is the issue on,the "Too many filipino nursing graduates, the exploiting issues of the hospitals, nursing schools that have low passing rate, the wrong reason why one took up nursing......

Thank you guys for not doubting the quality, spirit, and sincerity of a filipino nurse.

I have worked in the UK for 8 years now I am here in Canada working in the same filed - Geriatrics. Just a suggestion to newly grads. Since there will be an increase in number of baby boomers and soon be an aging population specially in the western world. Not sure about the stats in the Philippines. Why don't we focus on training our new grads on this field? Hopspital is one option but there are lots of opprtunities a nurse can do in various fields. Set up a health resource clinics. Like Diabetic clinic, Rehab clinic, home health services, tele-health, health and safety training centres or clinics in businesses, health Risk assessment clinics, etc. that is nurse initiated. Tie up with newly grad doctors too or consultant doctors and even hospitals. If you really want to volunteer then volunteer your time for a good cause. You don't have to pay the hospitals to volunteer or be trained. There are a lot of kababayans who are so poor that they have never seen a nurse or a doctor because they have no means. Reach out to these people and ask your politicians for this good cause. This is what's happening now in the western world. Case management of patients. Enthusiastically explore other options where you can help increase and improve the health of our people and the health system of our country. Prevention is better than cure.

Easy to say, but mind you it's hard work. If you want to succeed in life you really need to work hard. Working abroad is double hard work too. Plus adjustment to language, new culture and new environment.

By the way, we are forming a Filipino group here in our area in Canada and one of our purposes is to help our kababayans here and back home.

I just read news about a newly introduced legislation in the Philippines that will mandate hospitals to pay monthly salaries to nurses who volunteer/train at hospitals.

Has anyone heard more about this?  Do you think this will pass?

i have actually experienced this...

it's been almost 2 years and i still haven't landed a nursing job here in the philippines. A colleague told me to choose between working in a call center or practicing my profession (at least). So we went to this big training hospital to ask if there are any vacancies, and bluntly, they said, they froze hiring of nurses!! This had been continuously happening to all the hospitals. I have submitted tons of cvs, resumes to a lot of hospitals in metro manila, baguio, pangasinan, tarlac, still there's no luck. I also have completed a lot of trainings like BLS/ACLS, IV training, dialysis and stuff, but still no luck.

So what's an unexperiend, unemployed nurse gotta do? I had no choice but to pay the government hospital at least P1,000/month, not to mention the long line of aspiring volunteer nurses! I even had to get my name listed at 2am because i may run out of possible slots. This issue was already televised, however, I wonder how these hospitals got away so easily.they claimed that wht they offer is a "training course", not a volunteer program..it's still the same...

I just want to comment on what the government and other people say about the large number of nursing opportunities abroad. It's really very ironic..how can you (the government) have the guts to say that well in fact you know for sure that employers abroad require at least 2 years hospital experience. And how would that be possible if:
1. Most employers do not count volunteerism as a hospital experience
2. Local hospitals only accept volunteers
3. We still have to pay most hospitals just to volunteer
4.Paying to become a volunteer does not even guarantee employment

On the lighter side, without these hospitals asking for payment, where can we still get hospital experience...

I wonder if I can still resurrect this. Hmm, passed the board last Dec 2007 but since on hospital would hire me so I had to go on volunteer. So I had to choose

government hospital volunteer where I have to pay 500 a month,
sectarian hospitals run by Nuns where I have to pay 2500 a month,
another military hospital where I have to work 8-12 hour shifts and never be absent and sometimes alone in the ward
private hospitals that pay me 200 a day for 2 months before they can hire me full time

Unfortunately by the time my license came, the private hospitals were full, so I had to choose the government hospital when I was shocked to know that I would be working full load 8 hour shifts doing all the nasty stuff while regular staff nurses would just come and go and sometimes leave us nurse volunteers alone. This particularly happens during graveyard shifts when only nurse volunteers are left on duty while the real staff nurses go home and get some shut eye and "to only call if there are grave emergencies" and if "patay na ang pasyente wag nyo na akong tawagin, post mortem na agad". I only stayed there for 2 months.

So I worked in the military hospital, still full work load but at least the staff nurses couldn't be absent, however we were treated as "the lowest mammals" in the hospitals often ridiculed by being forced to perform in any event. Not to mention treatment from fellow nurses with rank or what you call military nurses, 1st Lt or 2nd Lt who are just trainees pero mga asal ang papangit talaga. The only thing that made the whole thing tiring was having to put up with all those militaristic tradition and strict attendance even if we weren't paid salaries. I had to stay 3 months before being allowed to leave or else I would be on AWOL status and wouldn't get a training certificate.

Then I tried the hospital run by Nuns, after paying the 2500 per month, the work load wasn't too bad probably because I was used to government and military hospitals. What was annoying was the fees that we had to pay, compulsory ACLS, BLS etc which would have been okay if they weren't priced at 5k not to mention materials and stuff. And everything was lick arses, the better person you know in the hospital the easier it is for you to get in or become regular or get easier shifts. Lakas ng power play talaga talbog ang government hospitals.

(Sorry for the tagalog sentences. I'm just a bit emotional over this.)

Right now I'm working as a marketing agent, MILES AWAY from Nursing but I have no choice really.
