In November 29 & 30, 2008, the biggest number of graduate nurses will take the Nurse Licensure Examination. It will be a historic moment in Philippine Nursing history since they are the largest group ever to take the examination reaching 88,000 in number. How many percent will pass the newly - structured board examinations? Those who will pass will again add up to the number of unemployed nurses in the Philippines.

Too many nurses now, and nowhere to go due to the retrogression.

The count will probably reach close to 500,000 RNs in 2009. This situation is unprecedented, since so many have jumped on the bandwagon, many unwillingly. And sad to say, but very few will be able to leave for the USA because of the lack of immigrant visas.

Has the government or the Philippine Nursing Association proposed any type of plan to get these students guidance or assistance?

The PNA has been very proactive in fighting for the cause of these new nurses. There are a lot of issues about the nursing profession in the Philippines. Many US - bound nurses are still waiting for their deployment time. Every year the number of RN's increase in thousands. Most RN's are forced to look for alternative source of income. Most nurses work as call center agents which is a growing industry in the Philippines. Some work as Medical Representatives for pharmaceutical companies. This is a disturbing situation for nurses who dreamed of a better future but in the end was deprived of that dream due to a tight competition in the market.

When I graduated year 1995 nurses was also in the world of the un employed. I struggled to find job. My first job was an insurance agent and then 2001 nurses was so in demand anywhere. My point is nursing profession has a trend like this a season of low and high so for nurses who hopes to find their luck just hang on your time will come just hang on to your career.

There are options for qualified nurses in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Don't let retrogression put your career to a halt.
Retrogression doesn't mean that you cannot get there, it just means the journey is slower and you can take the "scenic route" and enjoy other opportunities along the way.

Many nurses are taking up jobs in the mid-east to get experience while waiting for their visa number to come up; others are working in Canada or Australia.

There are options all over the globe!
