Yea, I'm "one of those" who still have lose 10 pounds as a new years resolution.  I just read the Best and Worst Cafeteria food article here --- it is hard to make food choices on the go.  I am also trying to refrain from eating meat so it makes it more difficult.  During this time of year, salads aren't as appetizing.  Please tell me I am NOT the only one who is trying to shed some pounds.. would like to know others are doing the same thing.  Another thing that's difficult is working nights.  I am scheduled night shift for the next 3 weeks, so I know my system is going to be out of whack.  If anyone else is in the same boat, please PM me.

Here are 3 other NurseTogether articles by the same author, Alice Burron.  There is good advice in each.  You should also check out "more articles" under the Health & Fitness section where you will find a ton of articles addressing the issue of weight loss and getting in shape.

I too am trying to lose 10 pounds and started my "diet" December 1st, which is the worst time of year to start!  I know that realistically, I am not going to lose 10 pounds this month, but what I can do is maintain my weight so that I don't feel worse after the holidays.  NurseTogethers's Alice Burron, a fitness instructor and nutritionist, just wrote an article that is on the homepage as well as the Health & Fitness section called - "Nurses: Maintain, Don't Gain!".  It's a simple point earning fitness program to do throughout the month of December, so that you don't gain any holiday weight.  Rather than torchure myself by trying to diet during this time, I'm just going to try and follow her plan which consists of earning and losing points based off of behaviors including getting 15 minutes of exercise daily, only having one drink, or eating a healthy breakfast.

If you are concerned about losing the ten pounds and don't want to put on extra weight this month, you should check out the article.  Nurses: Maintain, Don't Gain! - http://www.nursetogether.com/tabid/100/itemid/1618/Nurses-Maintain-Dont-Gain.aspx

Here's a few things that I am doing-- (I would like to lose 15 pounds by February so I understand)

1. No sodas or sugar drinks (including fruit juices unless its 100% juice)
2. Cut down on my coffee --because I usually put lots of sugar and creamer
3. No carbs after 7P -- when I work nights, I will have to plan this out because I usually have peanut butter crackers.
4. Always choose a salad when I am out to eat --no creamy dressing
5. I am starting to run on my days off and I bought 5 pound dumbells to do light arm exercises.

My hardest thing is that I have a sweet tooth and I struggle with this especially during Christmas because there are so many desserts at work and at home.
But, I want to lose my belly fat, so I'm really trying to be better about limiting my dessert intake.

lose the sugar - there's sugar in everything these days. Good quality protein, low sugar, lots of water - that will help.
