Jenny

Image of Jenny, Antigua, Guatemala"Traveling with a Surgical team to Guatemala gave me a different perspective on nursing. I have a new appreciation of resources so readily available to us in the United States, including supplies, electricity and sterilization methods."

As an OR nurse Jenny offers the following advice for prospective volunteers:

"Current experience a must! Be prepared to scrub and circulate all cases."

"Be adaptable, flexible and frugal with the limited available resources. Use your creativity and imagination to maximize those scant resources!"

"Be prepared to work long hours with little time off for relaxation or for sightseeing... go with the expectation of of working, anything else is a bonus!"

Jenny says it is important "...to not expect massive appreciation from the host country's staff or from the patients." She encourages volunteers to"...go with an open mind. Know the difference you make in the life of a child will be your greatest reward".

"Trust in what you love, continue to do it, and it will take you where you want to go."
