Deva-Marie Beck, PhD, RN — International Co-Director, Nightingale Initiative for Global Health — is a Nightingale scholar, nurse, author, multi-media specialist and global ambassador for the worldwide nursing community.
Born in Los Angeles, Dr. Beck has lived in several places in North America and currently lives and works in Canada’s Capital, Ottawa. She has been a featured speaker and workshop facilitator in Europe, Asia, South America, the South Pacific and across the United States and Canada. Recently, she has keynoted at nursing conferences in Beijing, Mumbai, Caracas and Istanbul, and also represented NIGH in global nursing leadership conferences convened by the World Health Organization in Lusaka, Zambia and Geneva Switzerland.
During 27 years of her own clinical nursing experience [1976-2003], she practiced in a wide variety Critical Care and Home-Care settings, including at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC, at UCLA, UCI, and UCSD Medical Centers in California. As co-author of Florence Nightingale Today: Healing, Leadership, Global Action (2005) and numerous related articles and textbook chapters, Dr. Beck has contributed new scholarship on Nightingale's extensive community and global work for health, recommending how Nightingale's legacy can further inform and empower 21st century nursing practice.
