Tips on Avoiding Lost Luggage and what to do if you loose it! by Shelby Gilje
- Before you pack, photograph clothing and other items, using a camera that produces dated pictures. If you loose your luggage at least you'll know what was lost!
- Keep valuables, medication, your nursing licence and passport/visa, at least one pair of scrubs, gloves, hat, stethescope, etc. makeup/sunscreen, and change of clothes in your carry on.
- Put your name and address inside and outside the luggage.
- Arrive early at the airport. Your luggage needs to get on the plane on which you will travel. Airports are recommending one and a half to two hours.
- If your luggage disappears, obtain the airline's claim form immediately.
- Send claims by certified mail with a return/receipt requested for documentation.
- Send copies of your complaint/claim to the Aviation Consumer Protection Division,U.S. Department of Transportation, C-75,400 7th St. S.W. Washngton, D.C. 20590. Check out Fly Rights on The Department of Transportation's web site.
- Be pleasant, but assertive in your communications. Keep copies of all correspondence and log any phone calls.
- After you've filed a claim, call the airline every two to three weeks to remind it that you expect a settlement.
- If the settlement does not cover your loss, consider filing a claim for the added amount under a homeowner's insurance policy.
What about my luggage...Can I carry this on?
Standard carry on size 22" X 14" X 9 or 45 linear inches.
"the box"
Some airlines are using sizing boxes at check in. If your carry on does not fit in the box you must check your bag. The size of your carry on includes all appendages such as wheels, handles and outside pockets. Most are limiting carry ons to two pieces including a business case.
